Roy H. Perlis, MD

Dr. Perlis is the Director of Pharmacogenomics Research in the Depression Clinical Research Program and the Bipolar Research Program at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Instructor in Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. He also serves as a consulting member of the American Psychiatric Association’s Bipolar Treatment Guidelines Workgroup.

Dr. Perlis earned his undergraduate degree in neuroscience at Brown University and his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. He completed an internship in internal medicine at MGH followed by residency training in adult psychiatry at MGH and McLean Hospital, and served as Chief Resident in Psychopharmacology. After completing a research fellowship, he joined the faculty of the Bipolar Research Program and the Depression Clinical and Research Program.

Dr. Perlis’ research has focused on treatment-resistant mood disorders. In addition to serving as principal investigator on clinical trials in both major depression and bipolar disorder, he studies clinical and genetic predictors of treatment response, with a particular interest in the difficulties in extrapolating from clinical trials to clinical practice. Dr. Perlis has published his original research in journals including the American Journal of Psychiatry, Biological Psychiatry, and the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, and has also authored several book chapters and reviews. He is coauthor of the APA Bipolar Treatment Guidelines and the Expert Consensus Guidelines in Bipolar Disorder. Dr. Perlis is the recipient of awards from the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression, the American Philosophical Society, and the National Institute of Mental Health, among others.
