Biography

Dr. Ryan Thompson is a general internist at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Instructor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School.  He serves as medical director of the MGH Complex Care Service, sees primary care outpatients at MGH Internal Medicine Associates, and inpatients as part of the Bigelow Teaching Service.  Dr. Thompson serves as Director of Quality Improvement (QI) in the MGH Department of Medicine, and is responsible for the Department’s large multi-specialty QI and population health portfolios.  He also serves as chair of the Readmission Reduction taskforce at MGH, and as medical director for several care transitions-related programs, including the MGH Stay Connected and Home Hospital programs and Continuous Care Initiative.  His research interests primarily focus on innovations to improve care delivery for patients, especially across transitions of care, and related to improving patient experience and continuity of care.  He has a particular interest in developing innovative care models for highly complex medical patients.  He teaches in several courses for residents and medical students on health policy and quality improvement, and directs the annual Health Policy Course for Partners Graduate Medical Education.  He earned his medical degree from the University of Utah, and completed his internal medicine residency training at MGH, followed by a year as chief resident.  He was the first graduate of the Fellowship in Health Policy and Management in the MGPO, during which he earned a Masters of Public Health degree from Harvard.

1) strategies to reduce avoidable admissions and readmissions to the hospital, in particular for high risk patients;
2) innovations to improve continuity of care for patients across the health care continuum;
3) health care delivery innovations that lead to improved quality, better patient experience, and/or lower costs of care;
4) programs to improve the education of residents, fellows, and medical students in health policy and quality improvement.
