About MGH Dermatology
The Dermatology Service at the Massachusetts General Hospital is one of the oldest in the United States dating from the mid-nineteenth century. Dr. James C. White, its first chairman, was also the first professor of dermatology in America (1871). The Service has continued this academic tradition and is currently one of the largest departments of dermatology in the world. Numerous clinical advances were pioneered by the members of the MGH Dermatology Service. The use of psoralen plus ultraviolet light (PUVA therapy) for psoriasis was developed at MGH (1974). The first multidisciplinary center for patients with cutaneous melanoma originated at MGH (1966). Together with the MGH Wellman laser/photomedicine laboratories the tunable dye/laser for the treatment of vascular birthmarks (1986) and the Q-stitch ruby laser for the treatment of pigmentation and tattoos (1990) were developed and introduced. Today the clinical division of the MGH Dermatology Service is a full-service unit encompassing medical dermatology, phototherapy, dermatologic surgery, and cosmetic and laser treatment.
