Mass General Physicians Organization

The Massachusetts General Physicians Organization (MGPO) is a multispecialty medical group dedicated to excellence and innovation in patient care, teaching and research.

Quality, Safety & Performance

Performance, Analysis and Improvement The Performance, Analysis and Improvement (PAI) Unit provides coordinated service to the provider community, including:

  • Supporting program development activities that will serve to enhance physician performance
  • Streamlining protocols and procedures for dealing with managed care and mandated insurance requirements
  • Managing the flow of information related to contract management across the Mass General and MGPO, and coordinating communications between the hospital, the MGPO and payers
  • Coordinating appropriate contracting and operational activities across Partners entities involved in contracts at the Partners level, and for PCHI capitated risk contracts
  • Providing consultative and staffing resources to Mass General and MGPO to plan, organize and support operations related to managed care and state- and federally-mandated insurance plans
  • Administering and monitoring activities related to delegated medical management, and maintaining compliance with requirements
  • Developing reporting tools in conjunction with Primary Care Administration and Managed Care Finance to monitor performance
  • Coordinating appeals activity related to inpatient hospital denials by payers

Quality Incentive Program

The MGPO Quality Incentive Program is designed to acknowledge and reward the effort required by clinical staff to adopt new electronic systems and necessary technologies and to help direct attention to important institutional and departmental quality initiatives. Many of these efforts are tied to publicly reported standards. Under the program, performance-based incentives are paid to eligible clinicians twice each year.

Center for Quality & SafetyEstablished in 2007, the Mass General/MGPO Center for Quality and Safety (CQS) supports the goal of creating the highest quality, safest care environment for our staff and patients. Employing a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, analysts, researchers, project managers, and informatics professionals, CQS serves as an institution-wide resource to further Mass General’s aspiration of leading the nation in quality and safety.

Patient Satisfaction & Services

The patient experience is integral to quality. There are a variety of techniques and tools for measuring the patients’ perspective on hospital care:

  • Inpatient Data: The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HCAHPS) is a standardized survey and data collection methodology for measuring the patients’ perspective on hospital care
  • Ambulatory Care Data: Since 2003, Mass General/MGPO has surveyed ambulatory care patients regarding operations and communications

Population ManagementA variety of Web-based applications enable physicians to provide reminders for preventive services (e.g. flu shots, cancer screening), order medications, tests and procedures, better manage the care of certain patient populations (e.g. diabetes patients), and order and schedule outpatient radiology testing.

The Mass General/MGPO Case Management Program is dedicated to ensuring that patients receive quality, patient-focused healthcare services in a timely, cost-effective manner. Case managers work collaboratively with the patient, family and the patient care team in the Inpatient Unit, Primary Care Practice, Emergency Department and Admitting areas.

Public Reporting & Transparency

The public, including patients, healthcare professionals, health organizations, payers and public policy makers, want more information about how the healthcare system is performing as well as greater accountability and transparency of information.

Mass General participates in several national and state initiatives to gather comparable data and report on hospital quality and safety:

  • Hospital Compare, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ web site,
  • The Joint Commission (TJC),
  • Massachusetts Board of Registration of Medicine
  • Massachusetts Health Quality Partners (MHQP)
  • PatientCareLink
  • U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Hospitals” report
