Research Fellow
Yuanwu (Nathan) Bao, PhD
Dr. Yuanwu (Nathan) Bao received his B.S. degree from Nanjing University, China in 2000 and Ph.D. degree in drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics from Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005. He is now a postdoctoral research fellow with Dr. Newburg, devising novel techniques for measuring human milk oligosaccharides. Oligosaccharides are the third most abundant component of human milk and are involved in immunomodulation. By acting as soluble receptor analogues of bacterial and viral adhesion molecules, they inhibit pathogens of the gastrointestinal tract and other mucosal surfaces. They also stimulate a bifidus-dominant flora within the colon. Dr. Bao’s research work is focused on the developing capillary electrophoresis (CE) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS) methods to quantify acidic and neutral oligosaccharides in human milk.
