Research Fellow
Weishu Zhu, MD
Dr. Weishu Zhu, a physician scientist from China, obtained her M.D. dedree in 1992 from West China University of Medical Sciences. Her work in Dr. Nanthakumar’s laboratory is focused on necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and the mechanism by which probiotics are able to prevent NEC in human intestinal models. By performing microarray analysis on resected NEC tissue and comparable non-inflamed intestine, she identified immaturity of the innate immune system as an important predisposing factor in the onset of NEC. She investigates the role of probiotics in human models of developing premature intestine for their ability to enhance innate immune response and prevent changes associated with NEC.
