Movement Disorders Fellowship Program

The Movement Disorders Fellowship is a two-year program that includes both clinical and basic science research.

Ten to twenty percent of the training focuses on examining and treating patients in the Outpatient Clinic, under the supervision of senior staff.  Fellows do not attend in-patients, nor do they have administrative responsibilities.

The other eighty to ninety percent of the training is done in the laboratory of a scientific mentor, and focuses on the neurosciences related to Parkinson’s disease and other related basal ganglia diseases.

The program is structured to launch graduates on a path toward becoming independent physician-scientists.  Two fellows are accepted each year.

To apply, please send:

  • Your Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • A statement of your goals for the fellowship. (One-page maximum)
  • Answers to the following questions:
    • How many years you would like to stay?
    • Would you like your training to be clinical only, research only, or a mixture?
    • If you selected research only, name the particular laboratories in which you are interested, or ask questions about specific labs.
    • What drew you to movement disorders?
    • What are your plans after your fellowship?
    • What is your visa status? (If applicable)

Please note that our Movement Disorders Fellowship Program does not qualify as a specialty training program for J1 visa requirements.

If you are interested in a research or mixed clinical/ research fellowship, your funding will probably come from a particular laboratory. It need not be at Massachusetts General Hospital, but is usually within the Harvard Medical School system. You should directly contact any laboratories in which you have interest, however, we may be able to coordinate funding and clinical/ research time with them.

We prefer that you send the material by e-mail to Alice Flaherty at aflaherty@partners.org. If you do not have Internet access, you may send your application via any ground mail service to:
