Our physicians are very involved in basic and clinical research directed toward understanding the causes and pathophysiology of Parkinson’s disease and related neurodegenerative disorders, and in identifying new effective treatments.
Clinical Research
Clinical research contributes to the body of knowledge on the most effective therapies for sufferers of various movement disorders. Patients may be able to volunteer to participate in clinical research if eligible.
Laboratory Research
A major collaborative research initiative, founded by MGH chief of Neurology, Anne B. Young, MD, PhD, is the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease (MIND). Our physician scientists’ work yields important contributions to the understanding of Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative diseases. For more information, or to find out more about donations and fundraising to support laboratory research visit www.mghmind.org.
Brain Donation Program
Many patients are interested in participating in research by making plans to donate their brains for PD research at the time of their death. These donations are vital for moving research forward and have led to many discoveries about how HD affects the brain, leading to clues for treatment. MGH hosts a large brain bank for research purposes. For information about costs and planning call Matthew Frosch at 617-726-1265.
