The Cognitive Behavioral Neurology Unit is a specialty unit of the Neurology Department of Massachusetts General Hospital. Its purpose is to offer comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services to patients with disorders of the brain affecting language, memory, problem solving, and other intellectual functions, as well as patients with neurological diseases that affect emotional function and behavior.
The unit is staffed by neurologists and psychaitrists from Massachusetts General Hospital. The full range of diagnostic and treatment facilities of the hospital are available to patients in this unit.
Location and Time
The Cognitive Behavioral Neurology Unit is located on the eighth floor of the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) Building, Suite 835. Please bring your hospital registration card with you to each visit. If you have never been a patient at Massachusetts General Hospital, please stop at Patient Registration in the ACC lobby first in order to obtain your hospital card.
The Cognitive Behavioral Neurology Unit meets weekly on Wednesday mornings between 8:00am and 1:00pm. Your first appointment will usually last one hour. A physician will meet with you, obtain your history, and perform a physical examination.
Appointments may be made by calling (617) 726-2777 or (617) 726-5533.
Special Tests
The doctor may schedule additional outpatient interviews and examinations; these could include cognitive tests (neuropsychology), hearing tests (audiometry), vision tests (neuro-opthalmology), and neurologic tests such as an EEG, CT, MRI, or SPECT.
Medications
When medications are prescribed for you, the doctor will explain how the medicine works, how you should take it, and any special precautions you need to take while on this medication. Prescriptions may be filled at a pharmacy in your community.
Neuropsychology Laboratory Research Opportunities
The Cognitive Behavioral Neurology Unit is closely affiliated with the Neuropsychology Laboratory, which conducts basic and clinical investigations into the nature of cognitive disorders. Your physician will describe the range of voluntary research projects being conducted, including neuropsychological tests of memory, improved methods of diagnosis, and investigational drug studies.
