Getting
Started in Research...
|
|
The Volunteer Department is pleased to assist research volunteers
and supervisors in meeting the needs of research volunteer staff.
In order to ensure that all volunteer records are complete and all
volunteers are eligible to work at MGH, we ask that you take a few
minutes to follow the instructions listed in this section.
If you have any questions as you proceed, feel free to contact our office
at extension 6-8540.
Volunteer
Supervisor Responsibilities
- Complete the Volunteer
Department Service Description Form and email it to us at MGHVOLUNTEER@PARTNERS.ORG
at least one week prior to the volunteer's start date. We will review the service
description and contact you to finalize the document.
This document is an important part
of the volunteer's electronic file. For this reason, we are unable to accept hand-written
versions. In addition, the service description must be emailed to the Volunteer Department in order
for us to include it in the electronic file.
- Write a letter of introduction, identifying
the prospective research volunteer, and sign it. Click
here for a sample introduction letter. Please be certain that the letter
is on MGH letterhead.
The introduction letter can be hand-delivered or inter-office
mailed to our office (Clinics # 143). Please do not fax or email the letter to our office.
Research Volunteer
Responsibilities
- Fill out a volunteer
application and bring it to the Volunteer Department. This
will allow us to enter you into our volunteer database.
When you submit your volunteer application, a member of our staff will
assist you with our sign-on process. You will be asked to complete
a form authorizing MGH Police and Security to perform a criminal
background [CORI] check. Note: CORI forms are given to volunteers to fill out upon
receipt of all other documents. This form must be filled out in the presence of
a Volunteer Department staff person. When the CORI check is cleared through Police and Security, the volunteer file
will be complete!
- Important health screening notice:
The hospital requires that all volunteers provide
documentation of the MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine
and a recent TB test result (from within the last 90 days).
If you have not fulfilled either of these medical requirements,
the Volunteer Department will schedule an appointment for you with
our Occupational Health Office when you bring your application to our office.
There is no charge for an Occupational Health appointment.
If you prefer, you may see your own primary care provider. However,
it is important to note that costs for MMR vaccinations and TB tests
will vary among medical providers and are expensive. Insurance
plans often do not cover these tests. These charges will be the
responsibility of the new volunteer and not the responsibility of the
Volunteer Department or the Massachusetts General Hospital.
Parking and Meal
Guidelines
We will provide your volunteer with
one meal ticket per day for our main campus cafeterias ($4.00 value)
and parking validation for the time that he or she volunteers at
MGH. For more information on volunteer benefits, please visit the
Guidelines for Volunteers section of
our website.
Volunteers have two weeks to obtain all health-related information
and deliver it back to the volunteer department. After two weeks,
a "freeze" will be placed on meal tickets and parking
validation until the health documentation is received.
Thank you for taking the time to complete these steps. We hope your
volunteers enjoy their MGH experience and trust this time will provide
them with opportunities that will be valuable to them and to you.
Please do not hesitate to call extension 6-8540 if we may be of
any further assistance.
Best
Regards...
