Director of MGHfC autism clinic receiving
special recognition from the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation
BOSTON - May 5, 2005 - Margaret Bauman, MD, pediatric neurologist
at MassGeneral Hospital for Children (MGHfC), is accepting the Doug
Flutie Jr. Award tomorrow at the 6th Annual Autism Update. Laura
Flutie - wife of the newest New England Patriot, Doug Flutie - will
present the 4th Annual Doug Flutie Jr. Award to Bauman. The award
is given in honor of the couple's son, Doug Flutie Jr., who was
diagnosed with autism at the age of three. It's presented each year
to a person who is devoted to research and treatment for individuals
on the autism spectrum. Previous award recipients include the late
Robert Wharton, MD, Congressman Dan Burton and Lenny Shafer, parent
and author of the Shafer report.
Bauman is being singled out in part because of her visionary approach
to treating children with autism. She founded and is now director
of LADDERS
(Learning and Developmental Disabilities Evaluation and Rehabilitation
Services): a multidisciplinary clinic dedicated to the evaluation
of children, adolescents and adults with a variety of developmental
disabilities, the majority of whom carry a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum
Disorder. She was also instrumental in creating the Autism Treatment
Network - a coalition of doctors, parents and researchers across
the country working to develop effective medical treatments of autism.
"The Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation is pleased to be honoring Dr.
Bauman who is well renowned in the field of autism. Her tireless
efforts to improve the lives of each and every child on the autism
spectrum have not gone unnoticed and we are truly grateful for her
perseverance," said Lisa Borges, executive director of The
Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism.
In addition, Bauman is an associate professor of Neurology at Harvard
Medical School. She is the Director of The Autism Research Foundation,
and is a senior scientific investigator in the Department of Anatomy
and Neurobiology at Boston University School of Medicine. Additional
positions include that of Staff Neurologist at Casa Colina Centers
for Rehabilitation, Inc in Pomona, Calif., with similar positions
at Cambridge Hospital and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. She
is the author many clinical and research papers published in peer
reviewed journals and is the co-editor of The Neurobiology of
Autism, published by Johns Hopkins University Press in l994,
the second edition of which is in press.

an integrated health care delivery system comprising the two academic
medical centers, specialty and community hospitals, a network of
physician groups, and nonacute and home health services.
The Doug
Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism is dedicated to assisting children
with autism and their families. The Foundations' mission is to support
financially disadvantaged families who need assistance in caring
for their children with autism; to fund education and research into
the causes and consequences of childhood autism, and to serve as
a clearing house and communications center for new programs and
