Jaff named medical director of the
MGH Vascular Center
BOSTON - September 24, 2007 - Michael R. Jaff, DO (below
left), a national and international leader in the diagnosis
and treatment of vascular disease, has been named the first full-time
medical director of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Vascular
Center. Over the past several years, he has been integral in creating
and shaping the Vascular Center at Mass
General West in Waltham, a distinctive collaboration of clinical
specialties working together to deliver comprehensive care to patients
with a wide range of vascular conditions. An assistant professor
of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Jaff also directs the Vascular
Diagnostic Laboratory at the main MGH campus in Boston, and he is
medical director of the Vascular Ultrasound Core Laboratory, one
of the world's largest peripheral vascular clinical device research
ultrasound laboratories.
"We are delighted that Dr. Jaff has agreed to lead our hospitalwide
Vascular Center," says Peter L. Slavin, MD, MGH president.
"He has the leadership, collaborative spirit and medical and
scientific expertise to guide our current clinical and academic
programs as well as oversee our efforts to introduce new technologies
that will help address the complex challenges of vascular disease."
The MGH
Vascular Center brings together specialists from seven clinical
disciplines - cardiology/vascular medicine, vascular and endovascular
surgery, vascular radiology, neurology, neurosurgery, cardiac surgery
and nephrology - and is the only such multidisciplinary vascular
center in the country. The center provides evaluation and treatment
for the full range of vascular disorders including peripheral arterial
disease, stroke and carotid artery disease, renal and mesenteric
artery disease, deep vein thrombosis, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations,
and problems with wound healing and blood coagulation.
Jaff, whose research focus includes novel therapies for peripheral
vascular disease as well as device and clinical trial development,
is a past president of the Society for Vascular Medicine. He recently
was the first ever to be designated a master of that society. He
serves as treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors for the
Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories.
In addition, he is a founder and board member of the American Board
of Vascular Medicine; on the boards of the Vascular Disease Foundation
and the Peripheral Arterial Disease Coalition; and on the editorial
boards of journals including Circulation, Catheterization and Cardiovascular
Interventions, Vascular Medicine, the Journal of Vascular Surgery
and Annals of Internal Medicine.
A graduate of the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in
Missouri, Jaff was a resident in internal medicine and chief resident
at the Cleveland Clinic, where he also completed a fellowship in
vascular medicine. He is a resident of Newton, Mass.
Massachusetts General Hospital, established in 1811, is the original
and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. The MGH
conducts the largest hospital-based research program in the United
States, with an annual research budget of nearly $500 million and
major research centers in AIDS, cardiovascular research, cancer,
computational and integrative biology, cutaneous biology, human
genetics, medical imaging, neurodegenerative disorders, regenerative
medicine, systems biology, transplantation biology and photomedicine.
MGH and Brigham and Women's Hospital are founding members of Partners
HealthCare HealthCare System, a Boston-based integrated health care
delivery system.
