Healing garden at MGH Cancer Center welcomes visitors

BOSTON - September 29, 2005 - This fall, the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Cancer Center is welcoming patients and families to enjoy the Howard Ulfelder, MD, Healing Garden overlooking Boston. Healing gardens are life affirming, reinforcing and help celebrate life as the seasons of change. The MGH Cancer Center hopes this space will provide a mentally and physically restorative retreat where visitors may enjoy spectacular views of the city and the Charles River. A dedication ceremony for donors who made the rooftop garden possible is taking place on Sunday, October 2 from 11 am to 1 pm at the Yawkey Center for Outpatient Care.

Besides breathtaking views, the 6,300-square-foot space includes an enclosed pavilion for year-round use; a courtyard seating area; plus an exterior garden with a lush lawn and landscaping, pathways, and a fountain. The thoughtful seating areas provide both privacy and small group settings. A glass wall encloses the entire outdoor space maintaining the views from all areas of the garden. An award-winning landscape architectural firm was commissioned to create the design.

Within a state-of-the-art patient care facility, the garden is conveniently located for the thousands of patients, families and staff of the MGH Cancer Center on the 8th floor of the Yawkey Center. It is well-suited for patient access, located beside the Cancer Resource Room, the pediatric cancer clinic and the adult infusion area for patients undergoing chemotherapy. The garden will be open Mondays through Fridays (except holidays), from 9 am through 5 pm.

As the largest provider of care to cancer patients in New England and a leading center in the United States, the MGH Cancer Center stands at the forefront in the fight against cancer. MGH clinicians are experts in specific diseases and work together in teams to ensure that patients receive the best care possible. With cutting-edge, comprehensive and personalized care, the staff of the MGH Cancer Center strives to improve the quality of patients' lives.
