Genetic Counseling

Some individuals have an increased risk of developing cancer based on their personal and/or family history. The Center for Cancer Risk Assessment (CCRA) provides evaluation, counseling, testing and referrals for ongoing monitoring, treatment and follow-up for people who may have hereditary cancer predisposition including hereditary breast/ovarian cancer syndrome, Lynch syndrome and many others.

Patients who learn they have a genetic predisposition to cancer have many options at Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center, including:

  • Ongoing surveillance and monitoring
  • Immediate action and/or additional treatment at a later time
  • Genetic counseling and testing for family members
  • Prophylactic surgery, care and follow-up
  • Cancer treatment and follow-up, following the development of disease
  • Access to the Mass General Fertility Center's Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis Program, which helps couples with an increased risk for a specific genetic abnormality to have a child unaffected by that particular disease

Genotyping

Many patients at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center have their tumors tested using genotyping, an innovative process that identifies mutations within individual tumors. Once identified, many of these mutations can be targeted with "smart drugs" that attack the tumor’s unique weaknesses.

Learn more about genotyping and how personalized medicine is changing cancer treatment.

Laboratory

Patients at Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center benefit from our on-site laboratory and pathology facilities. We offer:

  • Access to same-day fine needle aspiration and analysis, allowing oncologists to examine and obtain results from suspicious cysts or masses within hours, not days
  • Rapid, intraoperative pathology consultation, enabling surgeons to make patient management decisions during surgical procedures.

Medical Oncology

Our medical oncologists have extensive experience treating cancer and work closely with patients and their care teams, including specialists in surgical and radiation oncology, to plan the best combination and timing of medical therapies. All medical oncologists at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center are fellowship trained and board certified.

Medical therapies available include:

  • Chemotherapy in our infusion bays, which have recliner chairs and individual televisions and are spacious enough to allow you to bring a guest to accompany you during treatment. Our infusion bays have a sunny view overlooking tidal wetlands and a healing garden
  • Hormonal therapies to treat cancers whose growth is encouraged by hormones
  • Oral chemotherapies in pill form that can be taken at home
  • Targeted therapies matched to individual tumor mutations through genotyping
  • Supportive care therapies (such as infusions to stabilize bones) to eliminate or reduce symptoms that can interfere with quality of life
  • Clinical trials of promising new therapies

Palliative Care

Palliative Care services are available to patients during any phase of cancer treatment, including immediately after diagnosis or during active treatment. Services are available to people living with a serious chronic illness or dealing with advanced stages of disease.

In addition to helping with pain and symptom management, our Palliative Care team helps patients and families define their goals for care and make treatment choices. All Palliative Care services are coordinated with the patient’s care team and focus on keeping patients comfortable and active.

We use the following approaches:

  • A combination of medications and lifestyle approaches that focuses on maximum comfort. Each approach is tailored to the needs of the patient
  • Involvement of Palliative Care specialists early in treatment
  • Outpatient clinics
  • On-going bereavement support

Radiation Oncology

Our team of radiation oncologists offers a variety of radiation treatments to treat cancer. Radiation therapy may be given alone, or in combination with surgery and chemotherapy. Radiation oncology services at the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center combine the latest technology with a team of professionals who are specially trained in the planning and delivery of radiation therapy.

Our team meets weekly to discuss every new case, ensuring that each patient’s care plan is extensively reviewed. Our resources include:

  • Three state-of-the-art linear accelerators for radiation therapy, which provide advanced CT positioning systems and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for the most accurate delivery of radiation while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues
  • Frameless stereotactic radiation
  • Full-body stereotactic radiation
  • Image-guided radiotherapy (IGRT)
  • Adaptive radiotherapy
  • Breathing motion management
  • Advanced prostate brachytherapy techniques
  • Access to national radiation research protocols

In addition to our state-of-the-art equipment, we have one the most thorough and dynamic quality review programs. As a result, we maintain one of the best safety records for the administration of radiation.

Stereotactical Radiosurgery

Stereotactic radiosurgery is a highly targeted form of radiation therapy; it does not involve traditional surgery or incisions. The precise delivery created by this technique allows an oncologist to treat the tumor while minimizing the damage to healthy surrounding tissue. Two leading-edge types of stereotactic radiosurgery are performed at Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center: frameless stereotactic and stereotactic body radiation.

Frameless Stereotactic Radiation

We provide frameless stereotactic radiation therapy using an advanced delivery system that allows us to pinpoint the correct treatment area by making minute adjustments in our equipment. This allows our patients to receive the most accurately directed dose of radiation for tumors of the head and neck with the least amount of discomfort.

Stereotactic Body Radiation

We provide full-body stereotactic radiation therapy to treat tumors throughout the body, including the lung, liver and spine.

Surgical Oncology

For many of our patients, surgery is an important part of their cancer treatment plan. At the Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center, each patient’s care team includes exceptional surgeons who have extensive experience in using the latest surgical techniques to treat cancer.

Surgical techniques include:

  • Minimally invasive and laparoscopic techniques, which help reduce post-operative scarring and pain
  • Innovative procedures designed to save as much healthy tissue as possible, including sphincter-sparing surgery for many types of colorectal cancer

Clinical Trials

Cancer research – both in the laboratory and in the clinical setting – is constantly improving and expanding treatment options for our patients. The Mass General/North Shore Cancer Center offers patients access to a wide variety of clinical trials of promising new therapies. Your care team will be happy to discuss clinical trials with you as part of your overall treatment plan.

Learn more about eligibility and participation in clinical trials or contact the clinical trials team at 978-882-6032.
