Center of Excellence in Pain Education
Dr Jeffry Shaefer is the co-lead investigator for a major grant in pain-management education establishing the “HSDM and BWH Center of Excellence in Pain Education.”
His education initiative was selected by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Pain Consortium to make HSDM one of 12 health professional schools nationwide to serve as a Center of Excellence in Pain Education. HSDM was the only dental school chosen as the lead institution.
The Goals of the program are to promote independent learning via uni-professional case-based modules on patients with acute and chronic pain, conduct regular uni-professional small group sessions led by “pain champions” to discuss these cases, and conduct inter-professional workshops to promote collaboration in pain management education between our medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy schools in the Harvard medical community. The cases are tailored to the students’ clinical background in dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, or nursing.
The cases completed in 2013 are:
Shaefer J, Barreveld A, Arnstein P, Matthews M. Mrs Farley; a case-based fibromyalgia and TMD pain management training module sponsored by NIH CoEPE project.
Barreveld A, Shaefer J, Arnstein P, Matthews M. Mr Gateway; a case-based cancer pain management/open access training module sponsored by NIH CoEPE project.
