The future of academic oral and maxillofacial surgery is an important aspect of our department's mission. For this reason, the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery retains a percentage of its clinical practice revenues annually to help underwrite meaningful research and academic pursuits of our residents, students and faculty.
OMS Education and Research Fund: Investing in the Future of Academic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
As educators and investigators, we show our commitment to the future of oral and maxillofacial surgery by sustaining an active program of independent research and by providing leadership and mentorship in investigational methodology. Since 2002, the faculty of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has contributed a percentage of its clinical income to the Education and Research Fund in order to underwrite compelling investigational pursuits without regard to extramural funding. This investment derives value in many ways:
- it demonstrates in a tangible way our collective commitment to our teaching and research missions
- it stimulates innovative thinking and facilitates outcomes by providing seed money for new pilot projects and programs
- it enriches the residency program by ensuring completion of a major research project leading most candidates to publication and presentation at a national meeting during their training
- it provides a platform for outstanding dental students to experience academic oral and maxillofacial surgery early in their training.
To date, our internal grants have supported educational programs, travel, and pilot projects.

The following are ERF-funded projects conducted by OMS residents or HSDM students under the mentorship of OMS faculty:
1. Efficacy of temporomandibular joint bony ankylosis surgical treatments.
2. Serial immunohistochemical characterization of distraction osteogenesis in the minipig mandible.
3. Osseous tissue engineering with three-dimensional printed beta-TCP/PCL scaffold and early implantation: An in vitro study in a porcine mandible model.
4. Multilocularity as a defining characteristic of the odontogenic keratocyst.
5. Whole genome arrays for giant cell lesions.
6. Giant cell tumors of the jaw and long bones: The same or different? A clinical and radiographic comparison.
7. A histopathologic comparison of giant cell tumors of the jaw and long bones: The same or different?
8. Evaluation of curvilinear distraction devices for correction of mandibular deformities.
9. Immunohistochemical evaluations of giant cell tumors of the jaws using CD133.
