Dodson is first OMS faculty to reach professor rank through academic promotion apart from chair appointment.
Dr. Thomas Dodson promoted to full professor at Harvard
The President and Provost of Harvard University have approved the promotion of Dr. Thomas B. Dodson to Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, effective April 1, 2010. Dr. Dodson serves on the staff of Mass General and the faculty of Harvard School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Dodson was appointed associate professor upon coming to Mass General and HSDM in 1998. He is director of the Center for Applied Clinical Investigation, which he established in 2005, and served as director of the residency program until 2006. He is currently the research editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and serves on the board of directors of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation.
In the history of Mass General, there previously have been only six full professors in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, each receiving the rank concurrent with appointment to Chairman and Chief: Leroy Miner, DMD, MD, Kurt Thomas, DDS, David Weisberger, MD, DMD, Walter C. Guralnick, DMD, R, Bruce Donoff, DMD, MD, (currently Dean of HSDM) and Leonard B. Kaban, DMD, MD (currently MGH chief of OMS). Dr. Dodson is the first faculty member to achieve the rank of full professor by academic promotion through the Harvard system independent of appointment to Chairman and Chief.
