Leonard Bruce Kaban, DMD, MD, Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, was recently honored for his clinical and research contributions to pediatric oral & maxillofacial surgery and craniofacial surgery.
In October, Dr. Kaban was inducted as an honorary fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He was recognized for his clinical and research contributions to pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery and craniofacial surgery in the areas of: hemifacial microsomia, jaw tumors in children, particularly giant cell tumors, distraction osteogenesis, and minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Kaban is the third Mass General-trained Surgeon to be inducted into this College. Other Mass General inductees include: Dr. Judah Folkman, who received the honor in 1996; and Dr. Charles Bertolami, who was inducted in 2011. Other honorary fellows include: Dr. Hugo Obwegeser; Dr. Norman Rowe; Dr. Robert Gorlin; and Sir Terence Ward, among others.
In July, Dr. Kaban gave the presidential address, Mentoring, Education and Research: the future of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, at the combined meeting of the British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland.
As speaker and visiting professor, Dr. Kaban has crisscrossed the globe. Dr Kaban’s research includes the development of distraction osteogenesis for mandibular advancement, bone wound healing, and tissue engineering.
He has received many honors, including the HSDM Distinguished Alumni Award, AAOMS Research Recognition Award, Donald Osborn Outstanding Educator Award, and Harvard Medical School Award for Mentoring Women Faculty. Dr. Kaban is author or co-author of over 270 scientific publications and five books, including the text Pediatric Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
