Department renews OMSF training grant for pre-doctoral student research
The Department successfully competed for and renewed a training grant to support predoctoral dental students pursuing research in OMS. The “Student Training Research Award” was granted by the OMS Foundation. “This training grant is critical in helping HSDM students who have their sights set on OMS and academic research to establish their interests and expertise early in their careers,” says Dr. Dodson, director of this research program.
Dr. Kaban presents lectures at 18th ICOMS in Bangalore, India
Dr. Leonard Kaban traveled to Bangalore, India to conduct a plenary session at the International Conference on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, held November 14-18, 2007. Focusing on pediatric OMS, the session consisted of two lectures entitled “Jaw Tumors in Children: A 30 year experience” and “Maxillofacial Vascular Anomalies in Children”.
Dr. Halpern receives Timothy White Take a Stand Award
Dr. Halpern was presented with the Timothy White Take a Stand Award at the RESPOND gala on October 13th in Cambridge, MA. The award honors an outstanding institution or individual who has drawn local or national attention to the issue of domestic violence, leveraging a strong public or professional voice to encourage dialogue, promote awareness, and create change. The award is named for Timothy White, the late editor in chief of Billboard magazine, who was committed to speaking out publicly against domestic violence. RESPOND is the first domestic violence agency in New England.
Drs. Dodson, Flynn and Shanti receive awards at AAOMS annual meeting in Honolulu
Dr. Dodson was presented with the OMSF Ambassador Service Award by the OMS Foundation. This award is given “only when appropriate to a leader amongst OMSF Ambassadors who has shown outstanding service to the Foundation.” Dr. Dodson was recognized for his work promoting the OMSF REAP Campaign. Dr. Flynn and HSDM student Rabie Shanti, together with Drs. Arthur Adamo, Catherine Hayes, Richard Kraut, Michael Levi, and Norman Trieger, were co-recipients of the Daniel Laskin Award. The Laskin award is presented to the authors of the most outstanding article published each year in the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Their 2-part article, titled “Severe Odontogenic Infections, Part 1: Prospective Report, and Part 2: Prospective Outcomes Study” were published in July 2006 (Vol. 64, Issue 7, pp. 1093-1103 and 1104-1113.)
Announcing MGH Fellowship in Orofacial Pain
The Department of OMS is pleased to announce a new one-year Orofacial Pain Fellowship program. This program will offer additional training for graduates of accredited US dental schools with a preference for those with GPR or specialty training. Dr. Dodson becomes Research Section Editor of JOMS
Dr. Dodson has been appointed Research Section Editor of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (JOMS). JOMS is a monthly journal offering comprehensive coverage of new techniques, important developments and innovative ideas in oral and Maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Dodson honored by AMA Women Physicians Congress
Dr. Dodson has been recognized by the AMA's Women Physicians Congress (WPC)Physician Mentor Recognition Program as a physician mentor who has made a difference in the professional life of another physician. This program, in its inaugural year, is designed to recognize physicians who have contributed to the achievements of women in the medical profession. Because of his contributions, Dr. Dodson will be honored in a special presentation during the AMA House of Delegates meeting and will be recognized on the AMA WPC website and other AMA communication vehicles. Dr. Halpern featured in Boston Globe for work on domestic violence
Dr. Leslie Halpern was featured in the August 27th Boston Globe for her continuing research on markers to identify domestic violence. Together with Dr. Dodson, Dr. Halpern has developed a screening questionnaire used in emergency departments to identify victims of partner abuse. This work has generated numerous articles, including a cover story in the Journal of the American Dental Association last spring. Dr. Halpern sits on the steering committee of the AMA’s National Advisory Council on Violence and Abuse and plays an important role guiding policy on domestic violence. Read the article >

Dr. Seldin honored by MIT
Dr. Edward Seldin was presented with the MIT Lifetime Achievement award. This award, presented by the MIT Medical Department on June 16th, represents Dr. Seldin’s exceptional commitment to quality healthcare at MIT.
Dr. Donoff addresses UCSF graduating class
Dr. R. Bruce Donoff, HSDM Dean, was the commencement speaker at the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry commencement exercises on June 16th. His inspirational address was titled, “We Treat People, Not X-Rays.”

Dr. Kaban receives Norman Rowe Medal
Dr. Leonard B. Kaban, chief, received the Norman Rowe Medal and presented the Norman Rowe Memorial Lecture at the Britich Association of OMFS meeting in Aviemore, Scotland. Mr. Rowe was a pioneer in the diagnosis and treatment of facial fractures and co-authored the difinitive textbook, Fractures of the Facial Skeleton. He was a legendary surgeon during WWII and Dr. Kaban spent time training with him while an MGH OMS resident in 1971. Dr. Kaban’s lecture was titled: Not All Hemangiomas Are Strawberries: Diagnosis and Management of Vascular Lesions in Children.
Dr. Halpern to participate in symposium on violence and health
Dr. Halpern will present “A Predictive Model to Identify Women with Injuries Related to Intimate Partner Violence” at the 40th Annual Society for Epidemiologic Research Meeting. The presentation will cap off a symposium on relationships between child and adult exposures to interpersonal violence and subsequent physical and psychological health. The meeting is to be held at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel and Towers, June 19-21.
Dr. Dodson to present Richard I. Geller Memorial Lecture
Dr. Thomas Dodson will present the Richard I. Geller Memorial Lecture at NYU School of Dentistry on Wednuesday, June 20th. The presentation is entitled “Limiting the Risk for Mandibular Nerve Injuries After Third-Molar Removal: An Evidence-Based Approach”. The Geller Memorial Lecture is open to the NYU alumni and the oral and maxillofacial surgery community.
Dr. Dodson to co-anchor AAOMS panel on Bisphosphonate-related Osteonecrosis of the Jaws (BRONJ)
On Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at 1:00 pm, EDT, The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), through an unrestricted educational grant from Merck & Co., Novartis Pharmaceuticals, and Proctor & Gamble, will present a 90-minute Webinar entitled "Osteonecrosis of the Jaws: Bisphosphonates, Diagnosis, Management and Future Research." Dr. Dodson and MGH alum Dr. Salvatore L. Ruggiero will join other practitioners to lead the discussion and respond to online questions. This no-fee program format is designed to reach out to professionals and enable them to recognize and manage patients with BRONJ. Dr. Donoff to Chair the Board of 'Friends of NIDR'
Dr. Donoff was recently elected to chair the Board of Friends of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR). The NIDCR is the dental arm of the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC and is a significant source of funding for dental and craniofacial research. The Board is composed of leaders of the corporate, academic, and patient advocacy communities. The NIDCR will celebrate its 60th anniversary in June 2008.

Drs. Shaefer, Kaban to present Obstructive Sleep Apnea at Yankee Dental Congress
Dr. Jeffry Shaefer and OMS Chairman Dr. Leonard B. Kaban will present a seminar entitled “Obstructive Sleep Apnea” at the Yankee Dental Congress to be held January 24-28, 2007 at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston. This sold-out seminar will be presented in two sessions to meet the demand for attendance. The Yankee Dental Congress, one of the largest dental meetings in the United States, is presented by the Massachusetts Dental Society in cooperation with the dental societies of Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont
Now accepting applications for CACI Fellowship in Clinical Investigation
The Center for Applied Clinical Investigation announces that it is now accepting applications for its two-year Fellowship in Clinical Investigation, beginning July, 2007. Any current resident in oral and maxillofacial surgery who is interested in considering an academic career path should consider this fully-funded program that will nurture their skills in grant-writing, study design, analytic methods, and manuscript preparation. Grants Available for OMS Research
The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is pleased to announce that the Education and Research Fund (ERF) is currently accepting proposals from faculty, residents, fellows, and students. The ERF is funded by the Department to stimulate the development of research programs in the Department. Awards are for one year and may be renewed. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and may be submitted at any time. The ERF Application contains all guidelines for submission.
