Orthopaedic Oncology

Education

The Orthopaedic Oncology Group participates actively in education of not only the Fellows and Residents but the medical students who rotate through the service regularly as an elective or part of their surgical rotation. The Oncology Group holds four conferences weekly including a research meeting, and X-ray review conference with members of the Radiology and Pathology Departments, a patient management conference with members of the Departments of Radiology, Medical and Pediatric Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Pathology; and a review of the week's consultations with the staff and students. In addition the group are the major teachers in an Orthopaedic Pathophysiology Course given in the winter to residents from all over the United States. Members of the group join with Pathologists, other Orthopaedic Oncologists from New York, Cleveland and Nebraska and Radiologists to present the most modern concepts regarding the characteristics, pathology, pathophysiology, and treatment of these unusual disorders.

Research

We are constantly asked 'What caused my tumor?'. . . Why did I get this type of cancer?'. . . The what, why, where and when questions can only be answered through ongoing research. We are always participating in and conducting research studies to gather information to begin to answer your many questions. Depending on the type of cancer, we may request your permission to participate in one of our studies. The study will be thoroughly explained to you. If you consent, you must sign a consent form. You may withdraw from any study at any time without jeopordizing your ongoing care with us. Patients living with cancer hold the key to future treatment discoveries and possible cures.
