Patient Information

The Massachusetts General Hospital Orthopaedic Spine Serviceis responsible for all clinical, teaching, and research activities related to disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. This service offers the highest possible patient care that is enhanced by the combined experience of its fellowship trained spine surgeons and the critical peer review of an academic service. The goal of the service is to provide our patients and referring physicians with comprehensive and timely evaluations. The service specializes in initial evaluations and treatment of disc disease and disc herniations, spinal stenosis, fractures, tumors, inflammatory conditions, myelopathy, radiculopathy, infections, and failed back. With an emphasis on the conservative (non-operative) management of back and neck problems, the service works closely with Physiatrists, Physical Therapists, and the MGH Pain Center. When indicated, surgical options include discectomy, decompression, and fusion procedures, utilizing the most advanced techniques and, when indicated, spinal instrumentation. The Massachusetts General Hospital Orthopaedic Spine Service is a regional and international referral center for complex problems of the spine, including primary and metastatic bone tumors of the spine. With the MGH designated as a level one trauma center, we also use our expertise in the management of spinal fractures and patients with spinal cord injuries.
