Dr. McCarthy is Director of the Center for Joint Reconstructive Surgery at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Dr. McCarthy specializes in total joint arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy. After earning his MD from Georgetown University Medical School, Dr. McCarthy completed an internship in internal medicine at Georgetown University Hospital, residencies in general and orthopaedic surgery at Tufts New England Medical Center and a fellowship in Reconstructive Joint Surgery at MGH. He participates in residency training programs for orthopaedic residents from Harvard Medical School and Tufts University.

Active in numerous professional societies, Dr. McCarthy is past President of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, elected to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation. He has been on the Board of Directors and Chair of the Education Committee for the Hip Society and is an active member of many other orthopaedic organizations. He is currently President of the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy.

Dr. McCarthy has authored 13 book chapters, three textbooks, published more than 50 peer reviewed articles and currently serves as a consultant reviewer for a number of orthopaedic journals, including the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He earned the prestigious AAOS Aufranc Award in 2001, the Frank Stinchfield Award in 2007 and has given hundreds of scientific presentations nationally and internationally.

  • 2011 AOA - Austrian Swiss German (ASG) Traveling Fellows

    The Austrian, Swiss, German Traveling Fellowship is a program that was started in 1978 when the Austrian, Swiss and German Orthopaedic Associations sponsored a tour for four young orthopaedic surgeons to travel to Britain, the United States and Canada. In 1984, the American Orthopaedic Association became involved. Now one Austrian, one Swiss and two German orthopaedists tour during odd years, and one Canadian, one British and two American orthopeadists tour during even years.
