Biography

Dr. Henrik Malchau graduated from the Medical School at Aarhus University, Denmark in 1977. He received his PhD in 1995 from Gothenburg University, Sweden. From 1993 - 2004 he was Chief for Department of Orthopedics, Gothenburg, and he was one of the founders of the Swedish Hip Registry and its Director for many years.

Since 2004, Dr. Malchau has been an Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He also co-directs the Harris Orthopaedics Laboratory, which has made numerous valuable contributions to improving the long-term durability of hip replacements and knee replacements.

Research

Dr. Malchau's clinical and research interests are focused on documentation of primary and revision hip replacements.

Dr. Malchau has been a pioneer in the development of Radiostereometric Analysis (RSA), which is used to determine the movement and wear on orthopaedic implants used in hip replacements. This research tool is important in determining the success of joint replacement surgeries. Dr Malchau has done this cutting-edge work in close co-operation with research groups in Boston, MA and G?teborg, Sweden.
