Dr. Berkson is a Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Surgeon who uses state-of-the-art arthroscopic techniques and a personal approach to care, accelerating the recovery of shoulder, elbow and knee injuries and restoring the highest levels of activity.

Biography

Dr. Berkson received his BA Summa Cum Laude from Brandeis University and received an MA in Computer Science from Brandeis University. He graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine with an MD with Honors in June 2000. He completed an internship in general surgery followed by an orthopaedic residency at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Berkson completed a fellowship in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Berkson is a member of the MGH Sports Medicine Center and is an Instructor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School. He has worked as a team physician for the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots and is the Head Team Physician for Wheaton College, Eastern Nazarene College, Foxborough High School and Archbishop Williams High School. Dr. Berkson was recognized in 2005 as an Emerging Leader by the American Orthopaedic Association.

Dr. Berkson is the Director of the MGH Sports Performance Center. The Center integrates state of the art technology with the clinical expertise of Mass General Sports Medicine physicians, certified athletic trainers, biomechanical engineers, therapists, cardiologists, nutritionists and certified strength and conditioning coaches. The Center was featured recently on the Discovery Channel.

Dr. Berkson specializes in advanced arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, knee and elbow, and he has completed training in cartilage restoration procedures. His current research interests include pitching injuries and studies of shoulder and elbow biomechanics.

Dr. Berkson recently went on WRKO to speak about preventing sports injuries.

Research Summary

Dr. Berkson's clinical and research interests include treatment of elbow and shoulder injuries in the throwing athlete, complex arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of elbow/shoulder/knee, rotator cuff repairs, and complex knee ligament and meniscus surgery.

Dr. Berkson actively researches clinical outcomes as well as shoulder elbow and knee biomechanics with an emphasis on pitching injuries and recovery. He has a research appointment at Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he works with a research team to develop new technology to measure real-world biomechanics.

Dr. Berkson is the Director of the MGH Sports Performance Center, a program integrating state of the art technology with the clinical expertise of MGH Sports Medicine physicians, certified athletic trainers, biomechanists, physical therapists, nutritionists and certified strength and conditioning coaches to critically and scientifically analyze athletic activities and to maximize recovery from injury, prevent injuries, and enhance and optimize performance.

Dr. Berkson was identified as an Emerging Leader by the American Orthopaedic Association and recently was the recipient of the Nicols Foundation Young Researcher Award by the International Society of Arthroscopy.
