Podiatry Residency Program
The MGH Podiatry Residency is a three year training program with a comprehensive and diverse curriculum.
The MGH Podiatry Residency is a three year graduate training program, approved by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME). The program is well-rounded, highly-structured and designed for the mature, responsible, self-disciplined & self-motivated resident. The curriulum is very comprehensive and diverse, with longitudinal training experiences in clinical podiatry and foot & ankle surgery, and extensive didactic activities, including on-line courseware, lectures, and workshops. Our PGY-II and PGY-III residents receive training in foot and ankle surgery from over twenty-five faculty members (podiatric, orthopaedic and plastic surgeons) at MGH and several training-affiliated regional hospitals.
The entire PGY-I and the first 6 months of PGY-II provide a strong educational foundation in medicine & surgery, including 1 month block training experiences in 20 diverse medical and surgical disciplines on campus. During the second 6 months of PGY-II & all of PGY-III, each resident is provided an opportunity for extensive training in foot & ankle surgery (podiatric, adult orthopedic, pediatric orthopedic, plastic, etc). While on non-Podiatry medical & surgical rotations (e.g., internal medicine, general surgery, vascular surgery, etc.), our residents function as integral team members. When on block ward-service medical & surgical rotations, our residents take call per the Service/Department schedule. The PGY-II and PGY-III residents share call for Podiatry throughout the year. PGY-II & PGY-III residents manage their own patients in the MGH Podiatry Service out-patient clinic. All residents participate in our community outreach program, providing foot care, under supervision of an attending, at a local homeless shelter.
PGY-I residents are required to complete the course 'Designing Clinical Research' offered through the MGH Institute of Health Professions. The PGY-III resident is expected to provide in-service lectures to MGH Internal Medicine residents, Senior HealthWISE lectures, and a brief introductory presentation at our Service-sponsored Annual Winter Lecture. Each resident also presents cases from his/her individual training experiences per PGY at our quarterly Service Rounds. All residents must contribute to the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgons (ACFAS) 'Scientific Literature Review' annually.
Although our externship (clerkship) is currently inactive, we encourage interested students to make arrangements to visit and tour the hospital & facilities with one or more of our residents.
