Only weeks after the dedication of the Dinesh G. Patel, MD, Arthroscopy Learning Laboratory, the lab's resources are already being put to good use. The MGH Sports Medicine Service recently hosted a career workshop in the lab for a group of students participating in the MGH Center for Community Health Improvement's (CCHI) High School Program and who also are working at the MGH with the CCHI Summer Jobs Program.
Patel, chief of Arthroscopic Surgery, welcomed the students to the July 26 event, followed by special guest Rep. Jeffrey Sánchez, who encouraged the students to make the most of the opportunities available to them through the MGH.
The students then broke into two groups. The first headed to the Sports Physical Therapy Treatment Room to learn some basic information about sports-related injuries with Edmund Anstey, a Harvard Medical School student and research assistant, and Graham Frankel, also a research assistant. Anstey and Frankel explained how to deal with minor ankle injuries, including proper wrapping technique. Back in the Arthroscopy Learning Laboratory, Katherine Redford, a clinical research coordinator, taught the students about operative techniques, after which they explored dry knee models with arthroscopes.
"This was really fun," said Marvin Perez, who will be entering 11th grade in the fall and is interning in Patient Transportation Services for the summer. "I learned a lot."
The workshop was organized by Louise Borda, administrative director of Sports Medicine, Redford and Anstey, with the support of Patel and Thomas Gill IV, MD, chief of Sports Medicine.
