Sports Injuries: Mallet Finger

The Injury

Injury to the top of the finger can disrupt the ligaments that suspend the end of the finger. The disruption can result in the inability to extend (fully straighten) the end of the finger. Treatment depends on the severity of the injury. Immobilization of the tip of the finger is the initial treatment. The splint keeps the fingertip straight and is worn all the time for 5-8 weeks. If an X-ray reveals an associated fracture, surgery may be recommended.
