Memorial Service

"We come here together to treasure the memory of our loved ones. In times
of silence and distress their memories bring us new hope and courage in our journey towards the future. In times of search and adjustment, their
memories bring comfort and strength. We remember…"

Twice a year, in the Spring and Fall, the Palliative Care Team holds a memorial service in the MGH chapel. Says J. Andrew Billings, MD, director of the MGH Palliative Care Service, "It's a way to reconnect with family members and recognize that their suffering continues after the death."

Team members lead prayers and readings that represent a wide range of traditions, light candles and read names of patients they have served. At the recent service, they took turns reading the names of 160 individuals to a chapel filled with family members and friends. Marcia Guntzel Feldman provided music on the guitar. The service included readings in Spanish and English. A reception with refreshments followed the service.

Billings says that the service means a great deal to him and his team. "We're all so busy at the hospital. This service gives us an opportunity to sit back and reflect on our work and honor the people we have served."

Each family has a different reason for returning for the service. The team recognizes how difficult it is for families to come back to the hospital, and works to ensure that it is a meaningful experience for them.

The team welcomes and encourages all MGH staff members to attend memorial services.
