Three MGH Pathology department members win prestigious Burroughs Wellcome Fund fellowships

Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF) Career Awards for Medical Scientists are highly competitive grants for junior physician-scientists. This year, about 125 applicants passed the initial screening process at medical schools around the US. Of that select group, only 29 were then invited for interviews. And, of those 29, only 16 were finally awarded BWF grants. Rather wonderfully, three of this small group of 16 final BWF awardees are affiliated with the MGH Pathology department.

  • Agata Smogorzewska, MD, PhD, from the Clinical Pathology residency, doing research in Steve Elledge’s lab in HMS Genetics;

  • Miguel Rivera, MD, a junior faculty member in the Molecular Diagnostic Pathology Laboratory, doing research in Daniel Haber’s lab in the MGH Cancer Center;

  • Dan Cahill, MD, PhD, an MGH neurosurgery resident, doing research in David Louis's laboratory in MGH Pathology.
