Histocompatibility Laboratory

The Histocompatibility Laboratory is ASHI-certified and performs the testing required for bone marrow and solid organ transplantation services at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The HLA lab supports patients prior to transplant by managing and storing samples, typing recipients and living donors, performing antibody screens, living donor crossmatches, and providing consultation on deceased donor offers in real time.  The lab also performs and interprets antibody screens for Donor Specific Antibodies (DSA) after transplant.

The lab also does HLA typing and antibody testing required by the Mass General Blood Transfusion Service and Blood Donor Center. Total HLA lab test volume is approximately 11,000 tests per year.
