Susan L. Saidman, PhD

Associate Immunologist (Pathology and Surgery),
Director of Histocompatibility (HLA) Laboratory,
Massachusetts General Hospital

Associate Professor of Pathology,
Harvard Medical School

Biography

Dr. Saidman received her PhD in Experimental Pathology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1990, and subsequently completed a two year post-doctoral fellowship in the Histocompatibility laboratory there. She joined the staff at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1992 as Director of the Histocompatibility Lab of the Blood Transfusion Service. Dr. Saidman has been certified by the American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI) since 1994 and has over 30 years of experience in the field. She is on the staff of the Massachusetts General Hospital Blood Transfusion Service, is a member of the Massachusetts General Hospital Transplant Center, and serves on the Transplant Center oversight committee. Outside Mass General, she is a board member of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).

Research Interests

  • Treatments to reduce or remove HLA antibodies pre and post kidney, heart and lung transplant
  • HLA alloantibodies in patients who receive combined kidney and hematopoietic stem cell transplants to induce tolerance
  • C4d negative chronic humoral rejection
  • Methods to quantitate antibody strength and to optimize solid phase assays
  • HLA typing by DNA sequencing

Clinical Interests

Dr. Saidman's clinical interests include histocompatibility testing for solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; problems with and optimization of HLA antibody detection using solid phase assays; HLA typing; and proficiency testing.
