The
Robert E. Scully
Professorship in Pathology
Inspiring Excellence: Dr. Robert E. Scully
The study of pathology – and the
world of academic medicine at the Massachusetts General
Hospital (MGH), Harvard Medical School (HMS) and beyond – has
been indelibly impacted by the contributions of Dr. Robert
E. Scully, a 1944 graduate of HMS whose entire professional
career, apart from his time devoted to military service,
has been spent at the university’s teaching hospitals.
A renowned pathologist, investigator, teacher and mentor,
Dr. Scully’s outstanding service to the MGH and
HMS communities and the world of medicine at large has
spanned more than five decades – from 1950, when
he first accepted an offer from Dr. Tracy B. Mallory
to serve as assistant pathologist at the MGH, until his
retirement in 2005.
