Overview
Surgical Pathology
at the MGH is divided into subspecialties.
Our concept of complete subspecialization
was a system in which every specimen is initially
received, processed, diagnosed, and reported by pathologists
for whom it is in an area of particular interest and
expertise; there is no "general" diagnostic
pathology service.
Our Goal in
Surgical Pathology is multivalent:
1) to provide the most accurate diagnoses
2) to maximize our clinical efficiency
3) to enhance communications with our subspecialized
clinical colleagues
4) to promote faculty research efforts in subspecialty
areas
5) to optimize teaching of residents and fellows.
This innovation in surgical pathology has proved highly
popular and effective in meeting each of our goals.
Complete subspecialization can only be accomplished
in departments with sufficient volume in each area
to warrant several staff members activity for each
day's coverage.
The Current
Surgical Pathology Subspecialties are listed below.
Each of these forms a working group lead by a senior
pathologist. Each of these subspecialties has a research
component and provides a framework for collaboration
and academic pursuits.
