What will happen at my first appointment?

At your first appointment, your doctor will:

Take your medical history

You will be asked questions about your symptoms, periods, weight, pregnancy history and family history. Describe your symptoms and be honest about your lifestyle activities, such as diet, exercise, smoking and alcohol use. Let the doctor know if you have any allergies.

Give you a physical exam. This will include:

  • A pelvic exam to find out the size of your ovaries,
  • A clinical breast exam to feel for any changes or lumps in your breasts.
  • Looking at your skin for any unusual color changes or acne, and
  • Feeling your thyroid gland to see if it is a normal size.

Order blood tests – This may include:

  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Level - to check if you have an over or under active thyroid
  • Prolactin Test - to check the function of your pituitary gland
  • Lutenizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) (female hormones)
  • Testosterone and DHEA levels (male hormones)
  • Progesterone level - to see if you are ovulating
  • Blood Glucose - to measure the amount of sugar in your blood
  • Glucose Tolerance Test - to measure your body’s ability to use sugar
  • Cholesterol level - to measure the amount of this fatty substance (a lipid) in your blood.
