The Surgical Patient: The Challenge of the First 24 Hours

This workshop will provide a general review of post-operative care of the adult surgical patient. Lectures will discuss preoperative assessment, post anesthesia care, and potential patient problems that may occur within the first 24 hours after surgery. Patient assessment factors, patient care problems and postoperative nursing plans of care will be identified and reviewed to emphasize optimal patient outcomes. Case studies will be used to illustrate the continuum of care from preoperative to postoperative for specific patients. This workshop is intended for any nurse who may care for postoperative patients in a variety of clinical settings. Contact hours will be awarded.
