“...Challenging the process, inspiring a shared vision, enabling others to act, modeling the way and encouraging the heart.” (Kouzes and Posner, 1995)

Guiding Principles

  • Many factors contribute to nurse manager competence and expertise such as years of experience, education, role knowledge, presence/experience with mentor/coaching, level of self-trust, self-awareness and self-confidence.
  • Trust (self-trust and trust of others) is central to all leadership competencies.
  • Interactive dialogue and collegial consultation within the nurse manager group is highly valued and will be incorporated into programs to facilitate meaningful sharing, learning and relationship building.
  • The Manager role is constantly evolving and therefore the development of management / leadership practices are relevant at all levels of expertise.
  • Nurse managers as self-learners should be active participants in the design and development of their leadership program.
