PROFILE
Ellison 11 is a thirty-six bed Cardiology Unit. Staff on this unit specializes in the care of patients with acute coronary syndromes, arrhythmias, heart failure and other vascular diagnoses. Most patients on this unit require coronary or peripheral procedures, either diagnostic or interventional. Patients who require electrophysiology studies or procedures may also be admitted to this unit.

UNIT FOCUS

Patients on Ellison 11 benefit from nursing expertise in managing acute cardiac events. A unit based resource group exists to advance knowledge of preventative cardiology. Patient education regarding cardiac risk factor modification is a patient care priority on Ellison 11.

PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL

The patient care delivery model is a patient-focused model, supported by primary nursing. The management of patient care is collaborative, accomplished through a team of Nurse Practitioners, Attending Cardiologists, Clinical Nurses and unit leadership. Nurses value the clinical knowledge and expertise of their Nurse Practitioner colleagues as well as educational support from the unit based Clinical Nurse Specialists. The Patient-focused care is high quality, accessible, supportive and personalized care.

TEAM MEMBERS
The RN staff is supported by Patient Care Associates and nursing students. The support staff consists of Operation Associates who facilitate interdepartmental communication, coordinate patient flow on the unit and and perform clerical activities. Unit Service Associates maintain a clean and well-stocked environment of care. The Operations Coordinator oversees support staff, equipment issues, unit-specific projects and hospital initiatives. SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Staff schedules are driven by patient need. The scheduling process is staff driven and flexible to accommodate personal and educational needs. Once the schedule is posted, the staff manages changes. Most staff chooses to work 12-hour shifts.

STAFF ORIENTATION
All staff attends a one- week nursing orientation program. Unit orientation is preceptor based, individualized and determined by the Nursing Director, clinical nurse specialist and the new employee. The length of orientation is also individually determined. New nursing graduates participate in the New Graduate Mentorship Program.

EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Staff education and development is supported by The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development. Full and partial day programs are offered. Staff may also access outside educational opportunities. The teaching environment provides staff with a daily opportunity to discuss patient care related educational issues with members of the graduate medical education program and with other members of the care-delivery team.

Clinical Nurse Specialists provide educational support to staff on the nursing units. Staff has time allocated and the necessary support to offer educational programs to other staff members. Nursing Grand Rounds programs are offered on a regular basis.
