PROFILE
Ellison 9 is a sixteen-bed medical/cardiac intensive care unit. Patients on the unit are primarily critically ill cardiac patients. Other adult critically ill patients may be admitted to this unit.

UNIT FOCUS
The focus of the unit is to provide expert care to patients within an atmosphere of interdisciplinary collaboration.

PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL
The patient care delivery model is a patient-focused model, supported by primary nursing. Patient-focused care is high quality, comprehensive, accessible, supportive and personalized care.

TEAM MEMBERS
The CCU team is comprised of the nursing staff, patient care associates and unit service associates. The operations coordinator, clinical nurse specialist, Nursing Director and medical director support this team. SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Staff schedules are driven by the need to support patients seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. The scheduling process is staff driven and flexible to accommodate personal and educational needs. Once the schedule is posted, the staff manages changes.

STAFF ORIENTATION
Unit orientation is preceptor based, individualized and determined collaboratively by the employee, preceptor, clinical nurse specialist and Nursing Director. New graduate nurses participate in a six-month new graduate orientation program.

EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Numerous opportunities for learning and development are available. Hospital opportunities include nursing grand rounds and programs offered by The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development. Unit-based activities involve educational sessions and ethical rounds. Various educational opportunities are also available outside of the hospital.

Developmental opportunities are also numerous and include professional advancement through the Clinical Recognition Program, as well as formal teaching and leadership growth through participation in the preceptor role and the resource role.
