PROFILE
Ellison 16 is a 36 bed unit devoted to the care of the acutely ill medical patient. The Patient population on this unit includes a diverse mix of medical diagnosis requiring complex nursing care.

UNIT FOCUS
The focus of the unit is providing quality interdisciplinary, age appropriate care. At MGH, patients who are 65 years or age and older comprise about 43% of our admissions. Ellison 16 is proud to become the first unit at MGH to work toward providing extra resources and training in geriatrics to our staff according to the 65+ initiative. The knowledge and skills gained from the initiative will produce better outcomes for the older patient that we serve.

PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL
The patient care delivery model is a patient-focused model, supported by primary nursing. Patient-focused care is high quality, comprehensive, accessible, supportive and personalized care.

TEAM MEMBERS

The Nurse Director, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Operations Coordinator work collaboratively to promote a supportive, safe environment for practice.

SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Staff schedules are driven by patient needs. The scheduling process is staff driven and flexible to accommodate personal and educational needs.

STAFF ORIENTATION
All staff attend a one week general hospital orientation. Unit orientation is preceptor based, individualized process. New Nurses are supported by Leadership and through The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development. Unit based orientation is generally a 6-8 weeks in length.

EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Staff education and development is supported by The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development. Staff may also access outside educational opportunities.

Clinical Nurse Specialists provides clinical and educational support to patients and staff on the unit. Staff has time allocated and the necessary support to offer knowledge with other staff members formally and informally. Nursing Grand Rounds programs are offered on a regular basis.

Staff RNs have the opportunity to participate as a nurse preceptor. RNs may advance in their clinical practice and demonstrate proficiency through the Clinical Recognition Program.
