UNIT FOCUS
Staff are involved in committees at the unit
and hospital level. We have just formed a workgroup of staff to redefine
and write standards of practice for the unit.
PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL
The patient care delivery model is a patient-focused
model, supported by primary nursing. Patient-focused
care is high quality, comprehensive, accessible, supportive and personalized
care.
TEAM MEMBERS
The RN staff is supported by the critical
care technician as well as respiratory therapy, nutrition, social
work and pharmacy. In collaboration with the medical team, care
is rendered in a multidisciplinary manner. The MICU has a unit based
education resource as well as a CNS. To inquire about positions
available on this unit, contact
Megan Brown at mcbrown@partners.org.
SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Staff schedules are driven by patient needs.
The staffing and scheduling committee manages the monthly schedule
and vacation requests. The staff through negotiation settles schedule
or vacation conflicts. Staff work their desired schedule with the
following options being most popular: 3 twelve hour shifts, 2 eight
hour and 2 twelve hours shifts, and 4 ten hour shifts.
STAFF ORIENTATION
Staff schedules are driven by patient need.
The scheduling process is staff driven and flexible to accommodate
personal and educational needs. Once the schedule is posted, the
staff manages changes. On call needs are limited to voluntary on
call for CVVH.
EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Staff education and development is supported
by The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development. Full and partial day programs
are offered. Staff may also access outside educational opportunities.
The teaching environment provides staff with a daily opportunity
to discuss patient care related educational issues with members
of the graduate medical education program and with other members
of the care-delivery team.
