Nephrology practice includes the care of patients with impairment of renal function associated with complex diseases and disabilities. Treatments are provided in the following settings: a) seven station special care Hemodialysis Unit, b) Transplant Unit, c) Intensive Care Unit (s) (medical, surgical, neuro, pediatric, and d) in the patient's room if deemed medically necessary. The Endoscopy Unit provides total gastrointesintal care. Ninety-percent of the patients are outpatients and the remaining 10% are inpatients or transfers from another facility. There are approximately 20,000 cases performed in the unit annually. Blake 4


Bigelow 11, part of the teaching service at MGH, is a twenty-five bed acute medical unit. The patients on this unit represent a diverse adult population with a wide range of complex medical problems including cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, neurological, psychosocial and infectious disease. Ellison 16 is a 36-bed unit devoted to the care of the acutely ill medical patient. Patient population on this unit includes Congestive Heart Failure, R/O MI, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Renal Failure (including patients requiring CAPD), Liver Disease, Diabetes, and other medical diagnoses. Phillips House 20 is a twenty-bed unit for adult patients with a wide variety of medical conditions. All patient rooms are private. The unit is located in the Ellison Tower. Phillips House 20


Phillips House 21 is a 20 bed general medical unit. The population consists of private medical patients with the predominant specialty being cardiac care and oncology.

White 8 is a twenty-six-bed adult inpatient unit. The unit serves patients from culturally diverse backgrounds and geographic areas that present with acute and complex medical problems. Patients are generally admitted to our unit from the Emergency Department or as a transfer from one of the intensive care units. White 8


White 9 is a twenty-five-bed acute care medical unit. A majority of patients come directly from the emergency room and have single or multi-system problems including, but not exclusively, alterations in gas exchange, airway clearance, cardiac function, renal function, nutrition, hepatic function, skin integrity and mental states. White 10 is a twenty-bed adult inpatient unit. The unit serves patients from culturally diverse backgrounds and geographic areas that present with acute and complex medical problems. Patients are generally admitted to our unit from the Emergency Department or as a transfer from one of the intensive care units. White 10

 

 


White 11, part of the teaching service at MGH, is becoming a twenty-one bed acute medical unit. The patients on this unit represent a diverse adult population with a wide range of complex medical problems including cardiovascular, pulmonary, endocrine, neurological, psychosocial and infectious disease. White 13, the Mallinckrodt General Clinical Research Unit (GCRC), is a six-bed inpatient and four-chair outpatient unit. Patients on this unit include both adults and children who volunteer to participate in research protocols. White 13


Blake 7 is an eighteen bed Adult Medical Intensive Care Unit. This is a multidisciplinary unit with a variety of complex respiratory and medical patients. Critically ill surgical and neuro patients are also admitted to Blake 7. We care for many patients that require CVVH and we are also the study unit for patients on an experimental Liver Assist Device. Blake 7


The RACU is an 18-bed unit designed for the care of ventilator weaning patients in the improving phase of their acute illness. Patients come to the RACU mainly from the various ICU's at MGH. The patient population is diverse and includes medical, surgical, trauma, vascular, thoracic and burn patients. Patients are weaned from the ventilator and are transferred to general care units or rehabilitation centers.
