PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL

Having surgery is among the most stressful events in a person's life. The nurses in the Main OR provide patient-focused, individualized care. Each patient is seen and evaluated by a Perioperative Registered Nurse prior to surgery who serves as that patient's advocate throughout the procedure. Nursing practice is highly collaborative, offering opportunities to work side by side with physician, nurse and allied health colleagues from many disciplines. Nurses and technicians also have the opportunity to practice "outside of the OR doors" by participating on unit based quality committee, family nurse liaison, act as a preceptor or serve on the many task forces charged with initiating and evaluating practice or unit improvements.

TEAM MEMBERS
The philosophy of the leadership triad (Nursing Director, Clinical Nurse Specialist and Operations Coordinator) is to value excellence in nursing care, critical thinking as the cornerstone for nursing practice and career long development as essential management tools. Our new clinical cluster model in which groups of surgical teams are grouped together under the leadership of a Clinical Service Coordinator, allows for the celebration of specialized clinical expertise while broadening the base of support. In addition, each surgical specialty team is lead by the Nursing Team Leader who provides hands on support while acting as a resource for the team. RN's can function in either the circulating or the scrub role. Essential to each team are the roles of Surgical Technologist, Equipment Technologists, OR Assistants and Operations Associates. To inquire about positions available on this unit, please contact Karen Jarosz at kjarosz@partners.org.

SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Because the OR is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, members of the nursing staff have many options to individualize their schedules. All time plans and call schedules are staff driven. We offer flexible hours, many non-traditional shift options, mother's hours, part time and weekend incentive opportunities. We enjoy a large permanent evening and night staff, which make for a desirable call schedule.

STAFF ORIENTATION
Experienced OR nurses and Surgical Technologists can take advantage of our comprehensive, individualized orientation models where we work with you to determine where and what your learning needs are in order to capitalize on your talents as well as increase your repertoire. We offer an innovative opportunity for RN's interested in transitioning into OR nursing. MGH has partnered with Northeastern University to offer a Perioperative Certificate Program. This program offers a unique combination of lecture and real time OR experience that has proven to be a comprehensive, enjoyable and effective way to transition into OR nursing.

Once the basic education is complete, novice RN's and ST's enjoy a comprehensive, unit based orientation followed by the opportunity to transition directly into independent practice by functioning as a valued, novice team member. Each novice practitioner achieves independence in each of our "building block" teams, Ortho, Neuro, General and Vascular with options to select further specialization in any of our other teams.

EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
In addition to all of the wonderful opportunities offered by MGH and The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development, the OR leadership team is committed to the professional development of their employees. We have monthly educational sessions, often presented by our own staff, for which ceu's are awarded. We offer conveniently scheduled unit based CPR re-certification. We support staff driven practice and unit improvement ideas often culled from networking and being exposed to colleagues at national conferences. We were able to sponsor 60 RN's and ST's from our staff to attend national conferences last year!
