PROFILE
Ellison 7 is a thirty-six-bed adult inpatient unit. Patients on this unit are general surgical (mostly major abdominal procedures) and multi- trauma patients. Four of the beds on the unit are dedicated to the Trauma Rapid Admission Care Unit (TRACU). It is designed to house trauma patients requiring close observation immediately following their initial crisis period in the Emergency Department. Ellison 7 is a fast paced, exciting environment where the interventions are cutting edge. Patients come from all over the globe for the specialty care our nursing and physician staff provide.

UNIT FOCUS
Through caring and a strong application of knowledge, nurses assist patients and families to regain or maintain optimum health. They provide comfort, strength and understanding as patients move through the stages of illness and/or death. Clinical Pathways have been developed for this patient population to provide a guide for their care. These standards assist staff in setting realistic goals

and expectations in collaboration with their patients. Discharge instructions have been developed to accompany the pathways and are now available on the web via the Handbook.

PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL

The patient care delivery model is a patient-focused model, supported by primary nursing. Patient-focused care is high quality, comprehensive, accessible, supportive and personalized care.

TEAM MEMBERS
The RN staff along with patient care associates and nursing students work collaboratively with physical and occupational therapies, social workers, case management, IV therapy ect. The support staff consists of operation associates, unit service associates and pharmacy technicians. To inquire about positions available on this unit, contact Jeff Hickey at jjhickey@partners.org.

SCHEDULING PRACTICES
The scheduling process is staff driven and flexible to accommodate personal and educational needs. The unit operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

STAFF ORIENTATION
All staff attends a one- week nursing orientation program. Unit orientation is preceptor based, individualized and determined by the Nursing Director, clinical nurse specialist and the new employee. The length of orientation is individually determined but is usually six weeks. New nursing graduates participate in the New Graduate Mentorship Program.

EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Staff education and development is supported by the unit management triad (Nursing Director, clinical nurse specialist and operations coordinator). The Clinical Nurse Specialist provides educational support to staff on the nursing units. Staff has time allocated and the necessary support to offer educational programs to other staff members. Self-learning packets are made available to assist staff with on going in-service needs as well as continuing education. Staff are encouraged and supported when they seek certification in ACLS and participate in ATLS programs.

Staff RNs have the opportunity to participate as a nurse preceptor or a resource nurse. RNs may advance in their clinical practice and demonstrate proficiency through the Clinical Recognition Program.

Many nursing schools affiliate with the hospital and like many other units White 7 serves as a clinical site. Staff works closely with students and their instructors as they care for their patients. It provides a stimulating and motivating environment, rich with knowledge sharing and acquisition.

The Norman Knight Nursing Center for Clinical & Professional Development provides full and partial day programs. Staff may also access outside educational opportunities. The teaching environment provides staff with a daily opportunity to discuss patient care related educational issues with members of the graduate medical education program and with other members of the care-delivery team. Nursing Grand Rounds programs are offered on a regular basis.
