Bigelow 13 is a 22-bed adult patient care area. Twelve of the 22 beds are populated by Plastic Surgery patients. This patient population has a wide variety of diagnoses and undergo many types of surgical and medical interventions, including reconstructive and cosmetic procedures (e.g., free tissue transfers, replantation / revascularization, leech therapy). The remaining 10 beds are dedicated to patients who have sustained traumatic burn injury.

Ellison 7 is a thirty-six-bed adult inpatient unit. Patients on this unit are general surgical (mostly major abdominal procedures) and multi- trauma patients. It is a fast paced, exciting environment where the interventions are cutting edge and the patients come from all over the globe for the specialty care our nursing and physician staff provides. Phillips House 22 is a 19-bed premier patient care unit caring, primarily, for the adult surgical patient. The patient population includes general medicine, general surgery, gynecology, neurology, neurosurgery, oncology, orthopedics and urology.

White 7 is a twenty-seven-bed adult inpatient unit. Patients on this unit are general surgical (mostly major abdominal procedures) and multi- trauma patients. Ellison 6 is a 35-bed unit with the clinical specialty being orthopaedics and urology. The population of patients includes total joint replacements, trauma, and orthopaedic oncology.

The RACU is an 18-bed unit designed for the care of ventilator weaning patients in the improving phase of their acute illness. Patients come to the RACU mainly from the various ICU's at MGH. The patient population is diverse and includes medical, surgical, trauma, vascular, thoracic and burn patients. Patients are weaned from the ventilator and are transferred to general care units or rehabilitation centers.

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is a twenty-bed adult general surgical ICU. The unit accepts patients over the age of 19 years with existing or life-threatening surgical illness or injury. Patients are admitted from a number of services including general surgery, thoracic, trauma, vascular, orthopedic, gynecology, and obstetrics. Ellison 4


Ellison 19 is a thirty-bed adult inpatient unit. Patients are primarily thoracic surgical patients requiring post-operative care and airway management after tracheal esophageal, pulmonary, or laryngeal surgery. Adult patients experiencing medial and oncologic illnesses also may be admitted to this unit.

The Transplant Unit is a 21-bed special care unit located on Blake 6. Five of these beds are designated for critically ill transplant patients. The patient population is comprised of pre and post renal, renal-pancreas, liver, cardiac and lung transplant recipients. Additionally, patients may be admitted to the Transplant unit for treatment of acute allograft rejection, opportunistic infections and soft tissue infections. Long-term allograft recipients who require other surgical procedures may also be admitted to Blake 6. The patient population ranges in age from 6 to 70 + years. The unit is HEPA filtered and pressurized (positive) to help protect this immunocompromised population. Five of these beds are designated for critically ill transplant patients. Blake 6


Bigelow 14 is the center for vascular surgical nursing, including a twenty-seven-bed adult inpatient unit and the unit-based MGH Vascular Home Care Program. Patients on this service usually undergo vascular surgery or interventional radiology procedures to improve arterial blood flow. At the time of discharge, patients who live within a 20-mile radius of Boston may receive home nursing services, if needed, from our vascular nurses who have been cross-trained to provide home care through a partnership program with the corporate home health agency, Partners Home Care.
