Founded in 1811, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) is the third oldest general hospital in the United States and the oldest and largest in New England. The 902-bed world-renowned medical center offers sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery.

Each year MGH admits approximately 46,000 inpatients and handles more than 1.3 million visits in its extensive outpatient programs at the main campus and at its four health centers. Its emergency service handles over 79,000 visits annually. Each year the surgical staff performs more than 34,000 operations, and MGH Vincent Obstetrics Service delivers more than 3,200 babies.

MGH conducts the largest hospital-based research program in the United States, with an annual research budget of nearly $460 million. It is the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, and nearly all of the hospital’s active staff physicians are on the Harvard Medical School faculty.

MGH is the largest non-government employer in the city of Boston, with more than 19,700 employees, including almost 3,800 registered nurses. In addition, its 3,850-member medical staff includes physicians, dentists, psychologists, podiatrists, residents and fellows.  

MGH was recognized by the AARP as one of the 50 top employers in the country for that supports employees over 50. Working Mother Magazine selected MGH as one of the top 100 organizations in the country that supports working mothers.

MGH received Magnet recognition status in 2003 and was the first hospital in Massachusetts to achieve this prestigious distinction for excellence in nursing services. The American Nurses Credentialing Center redesignated MGH as a Magnet Hospital in April 2008.

Also, MGH is consistently named one of the country’s best hospitals by U.S. News and World Report and was recently ranked by The Scientist Magazine as one of the Best Places to Work in Academia.
