Magnet Hospital Recognition, is the highest level of recognition the American Nursing Credentialing Center can grant for excellence in nursing.

WHAT IS A MAGNET HOSPITAL?

In the early 1980s, there was a severe nursing shortage in the US. Nationally-conducted research studied the characteristics of hospitals that were able to withstand the shortage. Because of their ability to attract and retain nurses, theses hospitals were termed "Magnet Hospitals".

HOW DOES ONE BECOME A MAGNET HOSPITAL?

In 1993, fourteen standards based on the characteristics identified in the Magnet Hospital research were drafted and a certification program available to all hospitals and across all healthcare settings was created. This prestigious program is administered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the nation's largest and foremost accreditation and credentialing organization.

The Magnet Recognition Program affords important national recognition to health care organizations that demonstrate sustained excellence in nursing care. The program also provides a vehicle for the dissemination of best practices and strategies among nursing systems.

HOW WAS THE FINAL DECISION MADE TO AWARD MAGNET RECOGNITION TO MGH?

Hospitals seeking Magnet Recognition submit written evidence demonstrating that they meet or exceed the 14 standards. After a thorough review, they undergo an intensive site visit. A report is submitted by the ANCC appraisers to the Commission on Magnet Recognition. The Commission reviews the findings to determine if the standards of care and professional performance are met.

Less than 2% of the acute care hospitals in the US have received this designation and MGH was the first hospital in Massachusetts to be awarded this designation by the ANCC.

WHY IS BEING A MAGNET HOSPITAL IMPORTANT?

It is important to our patients because more than 20 years of research have shown that Magnet Hospitals have:

  • Reduced patient mortality
  • Fewer complications
  • Improved patient and employee safety

  • Positions the hospital nationally as one of a select few hospitals to achieve Magnet designation.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MAGNET HOSPITALS INCLUDE:

  • Concern for the patient is paramount
