to health-related research only.

and then drag the bar to the right and then down again
to the the words Internet Explorer.

will appear on the screen and you are now connected
to the Internet.
Linking to Other
Sites or Information

on the screen. When the arrow moves over a word or
icon that can connect you to more information, a small
hand will appear (this is called a HyperText link
or Link).
- Press your index finger on the left upper section
of the mouse one time (single click).
- You will see a small hourglass appear, telling you
that you are connecting to the Link.
- The new information or site will appear on your
screen.
- Continue to use the mouse to connect to Links, until
you find the information you are looking for.
Using the Scroll
Bar
- The scroll bar is the thin vertical bar on the far
right side of the screen. You can use the mouse and
scroll bar to help you move up and down through a
page or document. Using the mouse, place the arrow
on the small button with a single triangle pointing
downward, located at the bottom on the scroll bar.
As you single click the mouse the bar and the information
on the page will scroll downward. If you place the
mouse arrow on the small triangle pointing upward
at the top of the scroll bar, and single click, the
bar and information will scroll upward. Or, to move
quickly up or down the screen single click on the
scroll bar on the right, and drag up or down at the
desired speed.
- You can also use the up and down arrow keys on the
keyboard to move up and down through a document or
page.
Using the Internet
Explorer Toolbar
The horizontal "Toolbar" located at the top
of the screen can help you as you move around the Internet.
The small buttons that contain the words "Back",
"Forward", "Print", "Stop",
"Search" each have a different function to
help you.
Back: Using the mouse, move the arrow to the
"Back" button, and single click. This will
take you back one screen or page. You can only move
"Back" if you have already linked to another
screen or page.
Forward: The "Forward" button will
take you ahead one screen or page. Be careful, though,
because it will only move forward to a page that you
have already visited.
Print: The "Print" button will allow
you to print the page or document on the screen. Place
the arrow over the "Print" button and single
click. A "Print Window" will appear on the
screen. Move the arrow to the "OK" button
and single click. This will start the printing of
your document. Be aware that some of the documents
you print can be up to 30 or 40 pages long. If needed,
you can cancel the print job by pressing the cancel
button on the printer. Or, you can ask for help at
the Reference desk.
Stop: The "Stop" button on the toolbar
will allow you to interrupt the connection to a Link.
Sometimes the system is very slow, and the small hourglass
that is connecting you to a link will stay on the
screen for a long time. You can break the connection
by a single click of the "Stop" button.
Search: The "Search" button will
link you to a page were you can select from a number
of "Search Engine" web sites, "Directory"
web sites, or "General Reference" web sites.
Some popular "Search Engines" include: Yahoo,
Lycos, Webcrawler, AltaVista, HotBot, etc. See "How
to Conduct an Internet Search" for
assistance.
Favorites: The "Favorites" button
allows you to save a website or bookmark it for easy
access in the future. We ask that you do not bookmark
any Internet sites on the PFLC computers.
To Exit the Internet
Using the mouse, place the arrow on the (X) in the
far upper right hand corner of the screen, and single
click.
