The Massachusetts General Hospital Physical Therapy Department comprises more than 150 therapists, with more than 50 American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS)-certified specialists in cardiovascular and pulmonary, geriatric, neurologic, orthopaedic, pediatric and women’s health therapy.
Our expert therapists work with patients and their doctors to restore mobility and achieve the highest level of functional performance during inpatient hospitalization, as well as during ongoing outpatient rehabilitation. Our compassionate care is personalized to your needs and guided by the latest developments in therapeutic and rehabilitative practice.
We offer therapy services at the main Mass General campus in Boston, at community health centers in Chelsea, Revere and Charlestown, and at Mass General Waltham.

Our physical therapists provide evaluation, consultation and individualized treatment for patients of all ages with a variety of conditions and diagnoses in outpatient, inpatient and critical care settings. They utilize state-of-the-art technology and equipment in caring for patients with:

Post-Professional Clinical Training
MGH Physical Therapy Services is dedicated to the training and development of future clinicians. Through collaborative relationships with area physical therapy programs we are proud to offer extensive post professional training through the following ABPTRFE Credentialed programs.
Orthopaedic Physical Therapy
The MGH Institute's Clinical Residency in Orthopaedic Physical Therapy is designed for physical therapists wishing to advance their clinical skills in orthopaedics. This year-long residency combines clinical mentoring, academic courses, and opportunities for teaching, research, and community service. On-campus classes meets every other Saturday for 15 weeks starting each October. Upon completion, residents are prepared for the APTA Orthopedic Clinical Specialist Certification Examination.
Sports Physical Therapy
Massachusetts General Hospital Sports Physical Therapy has partnered with the Department of Physical Therapy, Movement and Rehabilitation Sciences at Northeastern University to offer a 13-month full-time clinical residency program for physical therapists interested in pursuing a career in sports physical therapy.
Neurological Physical Therapy
The MGH Physical Therapy Services Neurologic Residency program will be housed within MGH PT Services and has attained candidacy status through ABPTRFE.
This clinically based residency program is designed to advance a physical therapist’s knowledge, decision-making and skills toward that of an expert neurological practitioner and to prepare a clinician to sit for the ABPTS neurologic certification examination.
