Born in Jersey City, NJ, Dr. Winickoff attended The Lawrenceville School and Harvard College where he majored in Chemistry and was a Harvard National Scholar.  His medical education was at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha honor medical society.  His intermal medicine training was at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center and MGH.  He spent two years in the Public Health Service where he did research at NIH in metabolic diseases.  He became interested in primary care in Washington, serving as the Medical Director of the Georgetown Free Clinic, and after training joined the staff of Harvard Community Health Plan.  He spent 7 years there practicing medicine and doing research in quality of care and computer records with Dr. G. Octo Barnett.  While there, he was the Director of one of Harvard's first primary care residency programs in collaboration with the Beth Israel and Brigham and Women's Hospitals.  In 1979, he became Associate Chief of Staff for Ambulatory Care at the Harvard-affiliated VA Medical Centers in West Roxbury and Brockton, where he established ambulatory training programs in collaboration with the medical residencies of the New England Deaconess and Newton Wellesley Hospitals.  In 1995, he moved to his current position at MGH.  He has two sons, one a pediatrician at MGH and the other a bioethicist and professor at U. California, Berkeley.  He has 3 grandchildren in Somerville, and lives in Cambridge with his wife Susan, a clinical neuropsychologist.
