Ben Crocker is a general internist at Mass General and serves as medical director of the Ambulatory Practice of the Future (APF). His clinical interests and expertise include team-based clinic design and care and technology assessment in primary care.
Dr. Crocker attended Tufts University (BS, Chemical Engineering, 1992) and the University of Massachusetts Medical School (MD, 1997), including an additional year of instruction and research while in India. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Boston Medical Center, where he also served as chief resident. In 2001, he joined Internal Medicine Associates (IMA), the largest primary care teaching practice at Mass General, where he served on the clinical practice committee for nine years and led his care team in one of the first team redesign and development projects to improve patient access to care and reduce Emergency Department admissions. Through a Mass General Winickoff Clinical Fellowship award, Dr. Crocker led this same team in developing an office-based, post-discharge telephone follow-up program and published a review article on primary care based post-discharge telephone follow up.
Since the opening of APF, Dr. Crocker has been involved in the hiring and development of the APF team, building and implementing the practice’s strategic plan of operations, developing practice guidelines and policies, expanding urgent care services, and designing team building activities and team development processes. Through additional Winickoff and CIMIT/NIH grants, he has evaluated and published on point-of-care technologies and health coaching in primary care. Dr. Crocker is a co-developer of APF’s Innovation Learning Program and has collaborated on APF practice evaluation projects with graduate students from both Harvard Business School and MIT Sloan School of Management. He gives presentations and tours about APF and its programs to local and international audiences.
